About Akita in Fast CAT
Akitas are powerful Japanese working dogs — at the 1.0× handicap and 70–130 pounds, the breed's Fast CAT performances reflect that they're built for power, not pure speed.
Competitive Akitas run 24–28 MPH at the 1.0× handicap. The breed's leaderboard sits in the high 20s. The Akita's mass relative to leg length puts a structural ceiling on top speed compared with leaner sporting breeds, but well-conditioned Akitas reach the breed top 20 reliably.
The breed's main Fast CAT challenge is heat tolerance — Akitas are double-coated dogs bred for cold mountains, and their sprint times drop noticeably above 70°F. Successful Akita handlers concentrate their season on cool-weather events.
